Close But No Cigar For Monmouth Away At Motown
WRITTEN BY CHRIS DAILEY
FC Monmouth fell to FC Motown 3-1 in a bitter defeat away from home at Montclair State Soccer Park.
FC Monmouth got off to a blazing start, with Rhys Cotter trying his luck at chipping Motown’s goalkeeper shortly before John Troiano followed up on the attack and hit a missile from 30 yards out, stunning the away fans.
Troiano’s world-class effort was quickly canceled out by a Motown goal.
“It was exciting. It was definitely one of the best goals I’ve ever scored, so we better get the film on that,” stated Troiano jokingly regarding the goal.
Head Coach, John Killick, was also impressed by Troiano’s fantastic strike.
“I’m happy for John, I know he’s going to go a long way, but it’s great to see goals like that,” said Killick.
It was from there that the game got heated.
FC Monmouth’s, Robert Tapp, received a red card for a dangerous slide tackle in the middle of the park. FC Monmouth’s bench was shocked by the decision and the Blue and Gold had trouble coping with playing down a man against one of the top teams in the league.
FC Motown quickly scored another goal and despite FC Monmouth putting their best foot forward in search of another goal, they were unable to find one.
Later in the second half, FC Motown sealed the deal when they found the back of the net again, and Monmouth’s efforts with 10 men were unfortunately not enough to get by one of the most dominant amateur teams in the country.
“It was a tough one, after starting the game that way, the guys were putting it together and we had (Motown) on the rails. The red card, whether it was or wasn’t, changed the dynamic of everything,” stated John Killick following the game.
The match was a tough result to swallow for FC Monmouth, especially after having a blazing-hot start in the first half, and the Blue and Gold now look on to rebound against First State FC at Count Basie Park on June 24 with kickoff slated for 6 PM.
