FC Monmouth Announce Navesink Psychological Services As The Club's Official Performance And Wellness Partner

Tuesday January 16th

FC Monmouth is excited to partner with Navesink Psychological Services (NPS) as the club’s Official Performance and Wellness Partner for 2024.

NPS has rejoined with FC Monmouth after being a team partner in 2023.

Lead by Dr. Matthew Strobel, NPS was established to fill a void in the local health community that he became aware of as a school psychologist. Strobel is a licensed psychologist with specific training and expertise in sport and performance psychology. A lifelong Monmouth County resident, Strobel started Navesink Psychological Services in 2016 to support the local community. Since then NPS has grown into a multidisciplinary team of experts, who use scientifically-based methods to help our clients grow. NPS provides sport specific services as well as  individual therapy, evaluations, and advocacy services. Services can be provided in office, in the community/home, and through telehealth, based on clients’ needs. NPS have experience working with athletes from all levels, youth sports through to professional athletes.

“My first experience in sport psychology came out of tragedy when my brother's high school soccer team suffered the traumatic loss of their captain. Being one small part of helping the team come back after this devastating situation really opened my eyes to one of the ways that psychologists can help athletes. Seeing the team work together to support each other on and off the field was an experience I will never forget. Since then, I have continued to work with athletes from many sports and levels. I enjoy working with athletes from team sports (e.g. soccer, lacrosse, baseball, etc.), as well as individual sports (e.g. swimming, jiu-jitsu, tennis, etc.). Most recently I have also expanded my work to include esports athletes” Strobel explained.

Strobel has a long history of supporting soccer at the local level, stemming from in family youth days till now with FC Monmouth. He elaborated that “I grew up watching my younger brother excel on the soccer field and enjoyed watching him develop as a player. Though I never played myself, this led me to supporting professional soccer and I began attending Red Bulls matches and joined a supporters club. After having children, making it to the Red Bulls matches did not fit into the schedule as easily, but I missed the experience of watching live soccer. Living in the Red Bank area I happened to see a car magnet for FC Monmouth one day. I looked them up and was elated to see that we had such an excellent team so close to home. I attended my first match a few years ago and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere and the fact that I could watch such talent at the local level.

When supporting its athletes, NPS has a specific method of aproach. Strobel broke down how “At NPS, we support athletes/ performers using a framework anchored in three key components: assessing an individual’s abilities and needs, optimizing performance, and supporting mental health.  his can include situations where someone is hoping to excel and meet performance goals, return to sport after injury, or work on aspects of their game which may not be fully addressed in their traditional practices. We approach this work with a multidisciplinary team, which allows our clients to benefit from experts in a variety of fields. We can apply our framework and supports at the individual or group level, helping individual athletes, or whole teams and organizations. Our services can be provided in office, or in the community, such as at practices, games, and events. In short, we are another coach. Just as athletes may be accustomed to having a skills trainer, or strength and conditioning coach, we serve as a mental performance coach.”

Going forward, Strobel has big plans with NPS for 2024. “2024 is going to be a big year for NPS. We continue to grow our team and add new services to our many ways we support the needs of the community.  For example, we are adding experts to our evaluation team so that we can assess clients’ needs faster to obtain necessary accommodations to help people get the support they require. Our behavioral team is offering more in-home and community-based support to expand the settings where we are available to help people. Brand new this year is a young adult networking and dating skills program to help people learn how to navigate those areas. We also have a few providers who have completed certifications to allow them to practice in multiple states, so that we can continue working with clients who transition to college in another state, for example. At the top of our list, however, is coming back to support FC Monmouth this season!”
