Evan Unger Named Men's Assistant Coach
September 14th
FC Monmouth has announced the appointment of Evan Unger as the assistant coach for its men’s team.
“I look forward to working with some of the top collegiate players that come from Monmouth County. Having seen so many of the players come through different youth clubs in the area, I am excited to work with them during the next stage of their careers, and help them prepare for their college seasons” Unger stated.
The New York native is a ‘10 Monmouth University graduate and was a member of the Hawks Men’s Soccer Team alongside FC Monmouth head coach Hugh MacDonald. A team that advanced to the NCAA tournament after winning the NEC conference championship in 2005 and 2006.
Upon graduation, Unger obtained a stint as the General Manager of the New Jersey Wildcats of the WUSL.
In fall 2010, Unger returned to the Hawks as an assistant coach for the Men’s Soccer Program. Where he coached aside Hugh MacDonald for six years under head coach Rob McCourt.
“My previous coaching role with Monmouth University working with Hugh (MacDonald) gives us an excellent rapport, and gives us the ability to play off each other's strengths right from the first training session” says Unger.
Unger has since moved on to become the director of sales and marketing at Elite Development Program (EDP) Soccer. One of the largest organizers of youth soccer programs in the United States.
“My current position has allowed me to connect with college coaches and youth club directors from all over the region, and look forward to working with them to provide FC Monmouth players with a positive environment” Unger explained.
Unger, a now Tinton Falls native, can call New Jersey, Monmouth County specifically home.
“I have now lived in Monmouth County for more than half my life, and been involved in youth soccer in the county for the last 15 years. Playing at Monmouth University played a huge role in my life, and many of my former teammates are still my best friends today. My time as a coach there was the springboard to my career in the administrative side of the sport” he says.
Unger is eager to get going in this new role, and has large aspirations for the club.
“A goal of mine is to help FC Monmouth become a club that youth players in Monmouth County aspire to play for after High School, and help the club grow within the community.” He also added that “I’m a player coach who wants to create an environment where all players are able to play with confidence. Putting an emphasis on the technical side of the game and having the team play an attractive style of soccer, just as Coach MacDonald has done with Monmouth University each season.”
Given his experience on the playing, coaching, and administration levels of soccer, it is no question that Evan will be a strong asset to the club.
